Superintendent's News

October is Michigan Principals Month. Marcellus Community Schools is proud of those who lead at the building level.  Marcellus principals Lynn Wagner, Tracy Cropsey, Sarah Bischoff, and Amy Anderson are dedicated and passionate building leaders who work hard to ensure a quality education for their students.  Please join me in acknowledging and thanking them for their leadership and commitment to public education and our school community!
In school finance news, Michigan school districts have the opportunity to apply for a Section 98c grant to address learning loss or achievement gaps associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.  The grant is part of the Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) II Fund and the Governor's Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund.
Grant funds will be distributed on a per pupil basis with the amount to be determined by MDE, after November 30.

Marcellus Community Schools will consider using the additional money, estimated at $30 per student, for the following evidence-based activities:

  • Additional instructional time costs, including those associated with after school Homework Hour (tutoring) and Saturday School.
  • In school tutoring to address missed concepts and skills that are most critical to accessing upcoming content (accelerated learning and differentiation).
  • Curricular resources, including engaging classroom library and social emotional learning materials, to support low-income students, children with disabilities, English learners, racial and ethnic minorities, students experiencing homelessness, and children and youth in foster care.
  • Technology to enhance instruction and student engagement (e.g., Smartboard, digital content and instruction, Elevate K-12).
  • High-quality, reliable assessments that can assess student academic progress and assist educators in meeting student needs, including by differentiating instruction (e.g., Horizon PSAT/ SAT Aligned Benchmark Assessment).

Marcellus Community Schools welcomes input on how to best utilize these funds in our efforts to address learning gaps.  However, there is a short turnaround time to apply for funds.  Those interested in providing input are encouraged to contact me directly at npauley@marcelluscs.org before the end of the month.
