In late fall, the Michigan Department of Education released the Michigan School School Index.  The School Index report shows federally-required school accountability measures under the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015.

I am pleased to report that the Marcellus Elementary and Middle Schools were ranked at the top when compared to area schools!  In fact, our elementary students outperformed all area schools in Overall Index and Proficiency Scores, while middle school students ranked number one Overall Index, Growth, and Proficiency index measures when compared to area schools.

Up to seven components make up a school’s overall index value:

  • Student participation on state assessments
  • Student participation on the WIDA ACCESS assessment
  • Student proficiency on state assessments
  • Student growth on state assessments
  • Student graduation rates
  • English Learner progress on the WIDA ACCESS assessment
  • Measures of School Quality/Student Success, which include:
    • K-12 On Track Attendance (Chronic Absenteeism)
    • K-8 Access to Arts/Physical Education
    • K-8 Access to Librarians/Media Specialists
    • 11-12 Advanced Coursework
    • Postsecondary Enrollment

The index system calculates values from 0-100 for the school overall, as well as any components or subgroups within the school. Index values are based on the degree to which schools met targets in the different components.

In addition to their success on the School Index, Marcellus students and faculty can also be proud of other recent accolades.  In November, Marcellus Middle and High School’s earned recognition for their diligent work on MTSS Data Utilization while Marcellus Elementary was named a US News Best Elementary School.

These accomplishments not only bring pride to the Marcellus community but also serve as a testament to the hard work of our students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the support of our parents and community.

As Marcellus Community Schools continue to build on these successes, we remain committed to our mission of engaging students in meaningful instruction and fostering a community of caring, responsible, and self-motivated learners.
