Superintendent's Fond Farewell!

A Fond Farewell
As I prepare to retire on June 30, after thirty-five wonderful years with Marcellus Community Schools, I find myself surrounded by boxes, keepsakes, and a flood of memories while cleaning out my office. Tucked away in drawers and file folders are notes, photos, and mementos from across the decades, each one a reminder of the remarkable students, teachers, staff, school board members, parents, volunteers, and community members I’ve had the privilege to work alongside.
Just the other day, I came across a photo from the 2014 building project ribbon cutting ceremony, a moment that symbolizes progress, vision, and community pride. I remember standing side by side with our students and former Board President Tim Henry, scissors in hand, smiles all around. That day captured what makes Marcellus so special: people of all ages coming together to invest in the future of our children.
In another corner of my office, I found the wooden planks I kept from the old high school stage, worn smooth from years of school plays, talent shows, assemblies, and yes, even the beloved Vaudeville shows. They may look like simple pieces of wood, but to me, they are filled with the laughter, creativity, and energy of generations of Wildcats. They remind me of the countless moments when our students stepped into the spotlight, and our community cheered them on.
In my office closet, I located a box of cards and notes I’d received over the years that I just could not bring myself to discard. Each message was filled with praise for Marcellus students. One note applauded Marcellus students who stayed after a game to help clean up. Another, from an athletic official, praised the sportsmanship of the Cat Crazies. It was with a great sense of pride that I re-read these notes and cards. They confirm what I’ve always known: our kids are courteous, helpful, hard working, outstanding citizens. Whether they're volunteering in the community, excelling in the classroom, or simply holding the door for someone with a smile, they represent Marcellus with pride and integrity. Our students are a reflection of the values of this school and community, and they have always given me great joy.
Each item, each memory, tells a story. A drawing from a kindergartener, a concert program, a note from a graduating senior, all reminders of the heart and soul of this incredible school community. I am endlessly proud of what we’ve accomplished together and profoundly grateful to have been part of it.
As I close this chapter, I do so with full confidence in the future of Marcellus Community Schools. This district is in the hands of capable, dedicated, and passionate educators and staff who put students first every single day. Their commitment gives me great hope for the years ahead. On July 1, Dr. Michael Dunn will officially assume the role of Superintendent. Dr. Dunn brings a wealth of experience, a collaborative spirit, and a deep dedication to student success. I am excited to watch Marcellus continue to thrive under his leadership. To the Marcellus faculty, staff, and community: thank you for your unwavering support, your trust, and your shared belief in the power of public education. Serving this district has been the honor of a lifetime. Though I may be stepping away from my role, I will always carry Marcellus with me.
With heartfelt gratitude and warmest wishes,
Nanette Pauley
